The first day of the Lord's Test seemed to start with a rain of wickets. England-New Zealand took 18 wickets on the first day of the first Test. Today 8 more wickets fell in the first session. Then the rain stopped. After the second session of the second day, no wicket was taken in the third session at Lord's.
The rain of Lord's wickets has stopped with the pairing of two New Zealand middle order batsmen Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blandell. The Kiwis finished the day with 236 for 4 on the scoreboard with a pair of unbroken 160 runs for the fifth wicket in New Zealand's second innings. With 8 wickets in hand, they are 226 runs ahead of the host England. Blandell is undefeated. Mitchell is unbeaten on 96, while his partner Blundell is unbeaten on 90.
Random England collapsed on the first day in the afternoon and started the second day with 3 wickets in hand, trailing by 16 runs. Ben Stokes' team took the lead in the end, but it was not more than 9 runs. In a little over half an hour, the hosts are gone. Ben Fox was the mainstay of England's batting, but the wicketkeeper-batsman was caught behind the wicket by Tim Southee two runs before New Zealand's first innings score.
Matt Parkinson was announced as Jack Leach's Concussion replacement the day before, but he officially made his debut yesterday. The lead in his bat came from England, although he could not go far. Tim Southee took 2 of England's 3 wickets yesterday, who finished bowling with 4 for 55. Trent Bolt took 3 wickets for 21 runs. England lost 10 wickets for 72 runs in the first innings.
Batting in the second innings, New Zealand lost wickets early again. Like in the first innings, James Anderson was caught by Will Young in the first ball of the third over, again with 1 run. The pair of Tom Latham and Kane Williamson lasted for a while, batting together in 9.1 overs. Matthew Potts brought the next breakthrough to England. He returned Williamson for the second time in the match, this time the Kiwi captain scored 15 runs. Abhisit Pots also took the wicket of Tom Latham in the next over. After losing 3 wickets, New Zealand went to lunch with a lead of 29 runs. There was a discussion whether the first test would end on the second day or not.
Stuart Broad hit after the break, Devon Conway was out for 13. New Zealand's run was 56 then. Even after they started to turn around, the Kiwis lost those 1 wicket in the second session. New Zealand went to the tea break with 127 runs for 4 wickets.
After the break, Blundell saw the first half of the match. He reached the milestone by hitting Matthew Pots four times. Daryl Mitchell also got a half century in the next over. The England fast bowlers could not make a threat in that sense as they are relatively old. Parkinson, who came to bowl as the first spinner in the match, also gave 21 runs in the first 6 overs.
